Both Parts Produced per Hour (PPH) and Parts Produced per Man Hour (PPMH) are measures of productivity, correlating output - as units produced, to input - as either planned production minutes or planned man hours. Both measures are valuable as trending metrics to assess throughput improvements on a line. PPH is applicable for manufacturing cases where production is independent of labor or labor is non-variable; PPMH normalizes cases where labor is variable and is better-suited to that application.
Definitions and Calculations
Parts Produced per Hour = (Actual + Scrap) / (Planned Production Minutes / 60)
- Actual is the amount of product actually produced during the Pitch, Shift, Day, or Week
- Scrap is the amount of defective product produced during the Pitch, Shift, Day, or Week
- Planned Production Minutes is taken from the Production Pitch Boards. These minutes are determined during the scheduling of the pitch board.
Parts Produced per Man Hour = (Actual + Scrap) / ((Operator Count * Planned Production Minutes) / 60)
- Operator Count is the number of operators that were checked into a line for the duration of a Pitch, Shift, Day, or Week. This number can be a decimal if one or more operators were not checked in to the line for the full duration of the Pitch, Shift, Day, or Week.
The Line Pitch Boards (Production > Pitch Boards) contains the information required to calculate both PPH and PPMH values.
Pitch Calculation
Example: Pitch is from 14:00-15:00 with a 15-minute planned break; actual production is 154 units and scrap is 5 units on a line staffed with 2 operators.
PPH = (154 + 5) / (45 / 60) = 212
PPMH = (154 + 5) / ((2 * 45) / 60) = 106
Multiple-Pitch Calculation
Example Data: Each row is data for a pitch; data acquired from the Pitch Board is in white; calculated values are in yellow.
PPH for All Pitches
- Total Production per Pitch = (Actual + Scrap) per pitch = 12 + 0 = 12PPH for All Pitches
- Total Production all Pitches = 12 +26 + 27+ 15 + 28 = 108
- Planned Production Minutes all Pitches = 18 + 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 = 114
- PPH for all Pitches = Total Production all Pitches / (Planned Production Minutes all Pitches / 60) = 108 / (114 / 60) = 56.84
PPMH for All Pitches
- Labor Minutes per Pitch = (Planned Production Minutes * Operator Count) per pitch = (18 * 3) = 54
- Labor Minutes all Pitches = 54 + 72 + 68.64 + 72 + 72 = 338.64
- PPMH for all Pitches = Total Production all Pitches / (Labor Minutes all Pitches / 60) = 338.64 / (114 / 60) = 178.23
Under Production > Settings, the label for both the PPH and PPMH metrics as well as the numerical precision (decimal places) can be customized. The equations for both metrics are also available.
Prorating
This metric will be prorated in certain areas of the application. Please see the article on Prorated Production Metrics for more information.
