Downtime-Related Production Metrics

Downtime shows up almost everywhere in L2L's production metrics - not just as its own number, but as a component baked into several of the metrics you already track every day. This article pulls together every metric where Downtime Minutes are part of the formula, so you can see at a glance how a single downtime event ripples across your dashboards.

OA % (Operational Availability)
Formula: (Planned Production Minutes − Production Downtime Minutes − Planned Downtime Minutes) / Planned Production Minutes × 100
OA measures how long a line was actually available to run compared to how long it was scheduled to be available. Only downtime from dispatches with a "Down" impact counts toward the calculation, and Planned Downtime is only subtracted when the dispatch type is specifically configured to be excluded from the Availability metric.
OA reflects line uptime, helping supervisors identify whether equipment failures or unplanned stops are preventing scheduled production runs.
OEE % (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)
Formula: OA% × Quality% × Performance per Part%
where OA% = (Planned Production Minutes − Downtime Minutes) / Planned Production Minutes × 100
OEE is the composite score of Availability, Performance, and Quality. Downtime enters the calculation through the OA% component - the more downtime a line accumulates, the lower its Availability, and the lower its overall OEE score.
Serves as a primary indicator of total line performance by showing how downtime compounds with quality defects and speed losses.
Run Rate
Formula: Run Rate = (Planned Production Minutes − Downtime Minutes) × 60 / (Actual + Scrap)
Run Rate is your actual production rate in seconds per part, calculated net of downtime. It feeds directly into the Performance% calculation below.
Shows the real-time production speed per part after accounting for downtime, giving operators a clear benchmark for actual output pace.
Performance %
Formula (single pitch): Performance% = (Ideal Cycle Time / Run Rate) × 100
Formula (multiple pitches): Performance% = (Actual + Scrap) / Theoretical Parts × 100 where Theoretical Parts = (Planned Production Minutes − Downtime Minutes) × 60 / Cycle Time
Performance% shows how efficiently a line ran relative to its ideal cycle time. Because downtime reduces the production window used in this calculation, any downtime on the line will pull Performance% down along with it.
Performance Per Part %
Formula: Cycle Time / Run Rate where Run Rate = (Planned Production Time − Downtime) / (Actual + Scrap)
This is a per-part view of Performance, built on the same downtime-adjusted Run Rate used elsewhere.
Pinpoints speed inefficiencies at the individual unit level, allowing teams to see if specific product types cause line slowdowns.
Time Per Unit (TPU)
Formula: Total Operator Count × (Planned Production Minutes − Downtime Minutes) / Actual Production
TPU reflects the labor time consumed per unit produced, net of downtime. As downtime rises, the effective production time shrinks, which in turn changes the labor time attributed to each unit.
Helps track labor efficiency by revealing how much active worker time is spent producing each unit when downtime interrupts the flow.
Non-Productive Minutes
Formula: Operator Count × Downtime
This metric translates line downtime into labor impact - the total operator-minutes lost across the crew for every minute the line is down.
Directly quantifies the total labor time lost across the crew during a stoppage, highlighting the financial cost of idle workers.
Utilization (Operator Scorecard)
Formula: (Uptime / Planned Production Time) × 100
Downtime is displayed alongside Uptime as its own column on the Operator Scorecard, and directly determines the Uptime figure used in this calculation. Utilization shows the share of planned time an operator's line was actually up and running.
Lost Production % (Lost Production Time report)
Formula: ((Downtime Minutes + Non Execution Time Minutes + Scrap Minutes) / Planned Production Minutes) × 100
While OEE answers "how efficiently did I run," this metric answers the simpler question: "how long was I not running, and why?" It breaks lost time into Downtime Minutes, Non-Execution Minutes, and Scrap Minutes, then expresses the total as a percentage of Planned Production Minutes.
Breaks down total lost capacity into equipment downtime, non-execution time, and scrap, helping managers target the root cause of lost shift output.
